Back in the Land of the Living
It’s Sunday Night, tomorrow is a holiday, Labor Day. For the first time since last weekend, I feel caught up and rested up enough to be able to put a few words down for a blog.
Last week was full of just-in-time troubleshooting activity. I did get student accounts set up on Monday.
And I got both mobile labs charged, labeled and ready to go. I also got classroom laptops and last year’s Airliners out to teachers. Each Airliner needed to be rediscovered by it’s computer because we used them over the summer on different machines. 9 new Airliners will go out next week to those teachers who took the training this summer.
It was pretty exciting to peek into classrooms last week and watch teachers use their Airliners to engage students in a variety of ways. Teachers have some fun stories about incredulous students reading a message on the projection screen telling them to go sit on the carpet and they have no idea yet where it’s coming from… give the kids a week and they will be wanting to operate the Airliners themselves.
Several teachers have already pulled up lessons they saved from our summer workshops….that felt good.
Just-in-time help was mostly getting teachers’ doc cameras, computers and projector systems up and running. Also since teachers are all using Front Page to post daily assignments, and their class websites, I helped out with some password glitches and Front Page questions.
First Grade Story Problems with doc cameras and Movie Maker
I’ve been meaning to include this first grade project since last year. Fortunately 2 of the videos were still on the server.
Mrs. Manzano had her first graders partner up and create an addition story problem. Their task was to create manipulatives to show the story in a movie.
She had them produce their problem on the doc camera and tell the story to the class, while using the doc camera video capture feature. Because it doesn’t capture sound, the partners later added the audio to their movies using Movie Maker. Mrs. Manzano then saved it as a .wmv file.
Below are 2 samples. Can’t wait to see what teachers do with this idea this year.
